6/23/2023 0 Comments Solomon northup biography![]() ![]() A Canadian Samuel Bass came to work on Epps's plantation and befriended Solomon, plus agreed to try and help Solomon get a letter back to someone who could prove that he was a free man. In 1843, he was sold to Edwin Epps in Bayou Beouf, where he came to know Patsey, who was sexually abused by Epps and attacked from his angered wife. However, there the men drugged him and sold into slavery in Louisiana.ĭuring captivity, Solomon endured many horrors such as whippings, attempted hangings, inhumane living conditions and violent beatings. After accompanying the men to New York, Solomon was asked to extend his contract and join the group for their show in Washington, D.C. In March of 1841, Solomon met with two men to discus the possibility of employment with a circus. Anne also provided for the family with her outstanding cooking skills. The family then moved to Saratoga Springs, where Solomon worked at the United States Hotel while being known as a very good fiddler. In 1829, Christmas Day, Solomon married a multi-racial descent women named Anne Hampton and established a farm in Kingsbury in 1832 with their three children. Therefore, Solomon and Joseph grow up as free men giving them access to education and other activities other African Americans, at the time, could not participate in. Solomon's father was once a slave but was freed to due the death of his master. ![]() Solomon Northup grew up in Minerva, New York on a farm with his father and older brother Joseph. ![]()
